Token Economies

Page Status: Reviewed

Standards of Practice:

Differentiate between the use of “token reinforcement systems”   which are generally used to thin the schedule of reinforcement from a CRF/FR1 to an intermittent schedule from a comprehensive token economy where adaptive and maladaptive behavior may access points or tokens and access to privileges,  reinforcers etc. are contingent upon earning pre-specified levels of points/tokens.

Pre-requisites activities when establishing and using token economies:

1) establishing tokens as generalized conditioned reinforcers (this must occur prior to implementing a token economy)

2) Setting the token values

3) setting the values of adaptive/maladaptive behaviors

4)  determining when exchange/cash in can occur
